Overview
Glutathione (gamma-L-Glutamyl-L-Cysteinyl-Glycine; GSH) is a tripeptide thiol antioxidant synthesised endogenously in virtually all mammalian cells, with the highest concentrations found in hepatocytes. It is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant and plays a central role in cellular redox homeostasis and xenobiotic detoxification. This product is supplied in lyophilised form at 600mg.
Scientific Overview
Glutathione research spans oxidative stress biology, liver detoxification, immune function, and mitochondrial health. It has been studied in the context of age-related GSH depletion, neurodegenerative disease models, chemotherapy-induced toxicity, and skin pigmentation biology. Research has also examined its role in modulating immune cell proliferation and in maintaining the redox balance required for T-cell activation. Delivery and bioavailability studies have been a significant focus of recent investigational work.
Mechanism of Action
Glutathione functions as a direct free radical scavenger by donating a hydrogen atom from its cysteine thiol group, generating glutathione disulphide (GSSG), which is recycled to GSH by glutathione reductase in an NADPH-dependent reaction. As a co-substrate for glutathione peroxidases (GPx), it neutralises hydrogen peroxide and lipid hydroperoxides. In phase II detoxification, glutathione S-transferases conjugate GSH to electrophilic substrates, facilitating their export from cells. The GSH/GSSG ratio is widely used as a biomarker of intracellular redox status in research settings.
