Overview
Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a glycoprotein hormone consisting of an alpha subunit (shared with LH, FSH, and TSH) and a unique beta subunit that confers receptor specificity. In physiological contexts it is produced by syncytiotrophoblast cells of the placenta. Structurally and functionally analogous to luteinising hormone (LH), HCG is supplied in lyophilised form at 5000 IU for laboratory research use.
Scientific Overview
HCG has been extensively characterised in reproductive endocrinology research and serves as a standard reference tool for studying the LH/CG receptor (LHCGR) signalling pathway in gonadal cells. Research has examined its role in Leydig cell steroidogenesis, ovarian follicle luteinisation, and corpus luteum maintenance. It is used in research models of the testosterone axis and in cell culture systems studying LHCGR signal transduction.
Mechanism of Action
HCG binds the LH/CG receptor (LHCGR), a leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein-coupled receptor (LGR), with higher affinity and a longer half-life than LH. Receptor activation stimulates Gs-mediated adenylyl cyclase, raising intracellular cAMP and activating PKA, which drives cholesterol mobilisation into mitochondria via StAR protein and initiates the steroidogenesis cascade. In Leydig cells, this results in testosterone biosynthesis; in granulosa cells, it drives progesterone production and luteinisation.
Areas of Research
Third-Party Testing
Every batch of HCG supplied by Pure Recovery Labs is independently analysed by a third-party laboratory prior to release. Purity is confirmed via HPLC and mass spectrometry to a minimum of 99%. A certificate of analysis is accessible via QR code on each product and through the Quality page.
Research Use Only
HCG is supplied exclusively for in vitro and preclinical laboratory research. It is not intended for, and must not be used in, humans or animals. It is not a medicinal product, therapeutic agent, supplement, cosmetic, or food substance. All handling must comply with applicable institutional and regulatory requirements. Pure Recovery Labs makes no claims regarding therapeutic efficacy or safety in any biological system.
